We extend our condolences to Mick, Scott, Edward and Grace, and to all of our Leighton cousins. We are so saddened by Penny's passing, far too early in life, but have been continually inspired by all that we have learned about her spirit throughout her struggle with MND these past two years. We met Penny only once during our visit to WA in 2010, at the house in Perth where Edward and Grace were living while attending school, but remember her welcoming warmth and her positive energy. We were grateful to participate virtually in Penny's funeral and memorial gathering, learning even more about what an incredible person she was and how many lives she influenced. We take comfort in knowing that her struggle is over and that she is now at peace. May we all be inspired by her legacy.

It is with a heavy heart that I pass on my deepest condolences to Mick, Scott, Ed, Stacey, Grace & the Leighton Family. Penny was always so wonderful to me during my time at Wellstead & upon visits to Chillinup & COGS when I'd revisit the district thereafter. Whether it was working alongside her on various committees, taking me on farm tours to show me their landcare works, playing hockey or meeting socially her infectious smile, willingness to be interested in what I was up to and her pure kind heartiness will always stay with me. Penny & Mick were also so wonderful to offer being the first host of the inaugural Mallee Root Ball B&S in 2000. Supporting this community fundraiser by providing a paddock shows how much Penny & Mick cared for their community & wanted to support an event run by the younger generation. It went on to donate $10,500 to local groups that year. You're all in my thoughts. A life well lived with a lot of wonderful memories to hold onto. Love Serena Wyatt xx

Our family is richer for having met Penny, Mick, Scott, Edward and Grace. We first knew Penny as a student of remarkable excellence (of course!) at UWA and then later on the farm with her family. We remember Penny as always smiling, full of love and kindness, empathetic and willing to lend a hand. She may have left our lives in one sense, but she will be remembered often and with love, admiration and deep gratitude.

Our sincere condolences to Mick and family and to Sam, Jim, Silvia and Kylie and families on the lose of Penny . What a fantastic childhood pleasure it was to share so many school holidays right next to Penny and the Leighton family at Cape Riche in the 1960s and 70s . The image of the CT 90s pushing mobs of sheep down the lane towards the shearing shed with Penny forever laughing and smiling bringing joy to all those that crossed her path. I will never forget our last warm embrace, celebrating that childhood Just in case . Just like Pattie , touching and remaining in in the hearts of many. Andrew and Angela Gorman

The amount of Kids that Penny taught to swim at Cape Riche was amazing, one of the silliest memories I have of Penny was not knowing who on earth Penne Lope was on my swimming certificate. From family holidays to BBQ's on the Chillinup farm Penny has always had a place in my heart. My feelings go out to Mick, Scott, Eddy and Grace. It's going to be an incredibly tough time without Penny around anymore, and I'm so incredibly sorry you're going through this. But remember this, Penny made an impact on so many peoples lives and she will be remembered so very fondly by everyone who met her, and her memory will live on through out the Wellstead community members past and present. Thinking of all of you through this difficult time.

Penny a lovely Australian cousin who will be missed by a lot of people in the UK. She shared the name of my mother (Dawn) and we all loved hearing the news when we were growing up of what life was like with our Australian cousins. Although I have only visited Penny once on my trips to Australia we were made to feel very welcome by her and Mick and the rest of the family and still love to hear the news from abroad. We were devastated to hear her life was cut short by such a dreadful illness but will always remember her lovely smile and friendliness. God bless and rest in peace.

Deepest condolences to Mick, Scott, Edward and Grace, as well as the Leighton family. So sorry we are unable to share her farewell service with you. Penny was an inspiration to all who knew her. Such a love for life and with so much energy. Our years involved with Boxwood Hill football, netball and Combined Sports club are still treasured memories and Penny is right there in them. She stunned the crowd one day when her skirt came off while playing hockey but she powered on down the field dribbling that ball to the goals. Was not phased in the least. Rest in peace beautiful Penny. Carol and Trevor Parker Bremer Bay. xx

They say that life is what you make of it. I agree with that and I think that Penny made the most of her life. From our first meeting 35 years ago Penny was always active, fun, positive and, most importantly, always a joy to be with. From those early carefree days of parties in Perth and Wellstead, to our later years of correspondence from Chillinup, it was always a delight to see or hear from Penny and to follow the course of her busy and productive life with Mick and their family. Though life dealt Penny a very cruel hand at the end, she still played it as best she could, with courage and dignity. It is truly terrible that her life has been cut short but I take comfort from the knowledge that hers was a life well lived, and a life well loved.

Penny made an impact and thoughtful contribution in every endeavour. She fully embraced life and it is just so sad we have lost her. Penny took a keen and meaningful interest in so many aspects of community life and whether it was swimming lessons at the Cape or running junior hockey at Boxwood you knew that the example she set was of the highest standard. We all will have so many good memories. Condolences to Michael, Scott, Edward, Grace and all other family members.

So many memories across the years at Boxwood and around our coast. A memory that comes to mind for us. Traveling the hills and gravel roads around Chillinup at some very unsocial hour of the morning on the way to work, and seeing Penny already out and about on her pushbike! Treasured are the little memories of Penny, her welcoming smile and the time she always had for a chat no matter how busy we all were. How sad we are to say farewell so soon to someone so special. May you rest peacefully now Penny. Condolences to Mick, Scott, Edward and Grace and also the Leighton family.

Penny was a lovely cousin. I remember as a young child the excitement of receiving a Christmas parcel from Australia and reading all the names of our Australian cousins from what then seemed a far away land, little realising we would meet both in England and Australia in adult lives despite the distance. Penny was an inspiration with her physical fitness and strength and dedication to work tirelessly to care for family which began when she herself was very young. I greatly appreciate her hosting me for the day a few years ago and showing me around the Farm and also her dedication and kindness in helping my Father Peter Leighton over many years both at Wellstead and with organising and planning of financial matters in recent years. My Father has also really appreciated this support. Penny and all the family have very much been in my thoughts over the past 18 months. Thinking of you all and especially Mick, Scott, Eddy and Gracie.

A life well lived though cut way too short. Her passion for the bush and culture was honest and pure. A wise woman of the region who we all held with deep respect. Her commitment to community was inspiring. A wise woman who would always share . A wise woman who will be missed. Best wishes on this next journey.

It was very saddening to hear of Penny's death from that cruel disease, MND. Penny was an amazing and determined lady and, when she took on her role at the Wellstead Resource Centre, as the auditor, I saw her take it in both hands, willing to learn and take advice, determined to understand the mysteries of the accounting world, and to strive for a 100% accuracy level. She did it! I could never fault her when I did the audits! It was lovely to get to know her through this role, as she was a distant "cousin-in-law", and the inspiration that she gave out to others was truly very special. Rest peacefully, Penny, knowing that you have lived a great life and have left a beautiful family to carry on your memory. Deepest sympathies to Mick and family.

Penny, my Australian first cousin, was always amazingly generous with her time and friendship to her English cousins. However far away and however busy, she always found time for meeting up to exchange news and friendship, offered accommodation and gave tremendous support to my Dad (Peter Leighton) both when he was at the farm at Wellstead and then in retirement at Frenchman's Bay. I'm glad I was able to share some of her worries when she was first experiencing symptoms in 2019 and to hug her in March 2020, when despite just have been fitted with her peg, she was more concerned about my Dad updating his will than her own health. Strong, brave, pioneering, a lover of water (the Albany pool a poor substitute for the sea) I will miss her very much. David and I have shed tears for the unkind curtailment of a life lived full; send our love and condolences to you Mick and the wider family, and are so sorry we cannot be with you at the celebration of her life.

Penny lived a life rich in family, friendships and community. Growing up she was just my big sister, needing to shoulder responsibilities in tough times. From this early hardship Penny blossomed into the beautiful and capable young lady that soon stole Mick’s heart. Three wonderful children, a flourishing farm and an active member of the thriving local community. Always ready for a lengthy swim, run or ride to the horizon – and always just a little bit competitive! Struck down early, but smiling, gracious, colourful and thoughtful to the end. An inspiration both in life and in to face the unrelenting pathway to death. You leave behind a wonderful legacy of people’s lives you have enriched. We will miss you dearly Penny, but are so grateful for the life journey we have been able to share with you. Love always, Sam, Jen and family
