Lionel was such an amazing man, one of the smartest men I ever knew! He definitely left his mark on this earth by his love, kindness, patience and understanding and by leaving us with the beautiful Roberts family still with us. I’m sure John would have been waiting for him to show him around and no doubt they’re sitting on some heavenly front verandah deep in conversation. Love to all the family and RIP Lionel, you can rest easy among the stars x

Thinking of you all and sending my deepest condolences on the passing of your dad, Lionel.
He was one of those true West Aussie's — tough as nails, sharp as a tack, and always ready with a story that somehow got better every time he told it. We were lucky to grow up around men like him.
To Tony, the boys, the girls, and the whole extended family: your dad left a mark on all of us who knew him through school and the years that followed. He had a way of making people feel welcome, seen, and part of something bigger.
Rest easy, Lionel. A legend to many, and a giant to those who loved him most.

What an interesting man was Lionel. He told me of his childhood on the outskirts of Perth. He and his mates observed stockmen droving an annual cattle run down from the Kimberley and then having no further use for their horses, the let them go free. The kids discovered that whistling brought the horses out of the bush and they would mount and go for a ride. No tack needed as the horses were well used but not worth returning. The stockman would find new horses the next season. RIP Lionel, be free with the brumbies.
